A Jungle Experience Unlike Any Other

Why Chimpanzee Trekking is Special

Chimpanzee trekking is one of the things that makes a Uganda safari truly unique. Kibale Forest National Park is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees and the highest diversity and density of primates on the continent — making it the best place in East Africa to see chimpanzees in the wild.

Unlike gorillas, chimps are energetic, noisy and constantly moving through the canopy. One moment they feed quietly; the next they call loudly and swing through the branches above you. Sharing 98% of human DNA, their social politics, sibling rivalries and maternal tenderness are uncannily familiar — and the encounter is exhilarating.

Two Ways to Trek

Standard Trek vs Habituation Experience

🐒Standard Chimpanzee Trek

The classic experience — ranger-guided through Kibale’s rainforest until the trackers locate a habituated family. Observe them feeding, grooming and swinging for one hour. Available morning and afternoon, every day. Maximum 6 visitors per group.

🦍Habituation Experience (CHEX)

Spend an entire day alongside UWA researchers studying a chimp family still being habituated to humans. Watch them descend from overnight nests at dawn, forage, hunt, rest and display until they build new nests at dusk. A rare immersive experience limited to just 4 visitors per day.
