Gorilla Trekking FAQs
Is gorilla trekking physically difficult?
Treks range from moderate to challenging depending on the gorillas’ location and daily forest terrain. The hike can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 4+ hours one-way. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended — most healthy adults of any age can complete the trek with the help of a porter. Rangers select a group suited to your fitness level.
How close can you get to the gorillas?
UWA regulations require a minimum distance of 7 metres at all times. However, gorillas may sometimes approach closer out of curiosity — particularly younger ones. When this happens, rangers instruct you to step back slowly and calmly. The gorillas are entirely habituated and do not see you as a threat.
Are mountain gorillas dangerous?
Mountain gorillas are generally calm and peaceful animals when trekking rules are followed. The silverback male may perform a mock charge or chest-beat if he feels uneasy — this is normal display behaviour, not genuine aggression. Remain still, crouch slightly, avoid eye contact, and your guide will manage the situation. No trekker following the rules has been seriously harmed.
How many people visit a gorilla family per day?
A maximum of 8 visitors is permitted per gorilla family per day. This strict limit protects the animals from over-exposure and stress, and ensures every trekker enjoys an intimate, uncrowded encounter. Groups are assigned to families based on fitness level, trekking preference and sector.
When should I book my gorilla permit?
As early as possible. During peak dry season (June–August and December–February), popular Bwindi sectors can be fully booked 6–12 months in advance. NatureTrack recommends booking at least 4–6 months ahead for any travel and 9–12 months ahead for peak season preferred dates.
What is the Gorilla Habituation Experience?
The Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHE) allows you to spend 4 hours — rather than 1 — with a gorilla family that is still being accustomed to human presence by UWA researchers. Available only in Rushaga sector of Bwindi, it costs $1,500 per person and offers unparalleled insight into gorilla behaviour and the habituation process itself.
