Rwanda Luxury Gorillas & Wildlife Safari – 5 Days

You will be met at Kigali Airport by your guide on arrival and transferred to Akagera National Park — roughly a 2½ hour drive. Akagera is the only national park in Rwanda where the Big Five can be seen, and is richly populated with giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, antelopes, impalas, topi and serval cats. With over 500 bird species recorded, it is also a superb birding destination.

After an early breakfast, head out for a morning game drive across the savanna grasslands of Akagera. From your 4×4 safari vehicle expect to spot lions, elephants, leopards, Masai giraffes, impalas, buffaloes, rhinos, baboons, oribis, gazelles and Burchell's zebras over the 2–3 hour drive.

The afternoon is spent on a boat cruise along Lake Ihema, rewarding you with hippos and crocodiles along the shoreline plus abundant aquatic birdlife including herons, shoebill storks, jacanas, pipers and ibis.

After breakfast and check-out from your Akagera lodge, drive to Volcanoes National Park. Check in at your gorilla safari lodge in time for dinner and overnight.

After breakfast, report to the briefing point at 8:00am to learn the rules for gorilla trekking. Carry packed lunch and bottled water — the trek is strenuous and can take 2 to 6 hours. Once you reach the gorilla family allocated to your group, you spend one magical hour observing and photographing them up close. After the trek, return to the lodge to relax, then visit the beautiful Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.
